hey guys. i wanted to tell everyone about my comedy show on saturday night. 5 bucks - show at 7 saturday night at bourbon theatre. tim timburrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! burke and downtown jason downs also performing.

farm update - 9 foxes trapped including the wicked witch from the west - the very large old male that was for sure the main culprit. things are back to normal for the goats - there are 20 babies so far and please come out to visit them if you would like. they are hilarious. if you dont want to drive all the way to the farm you can just come over to our house as we are bottlefeeding margot and JJ who lost their mother after she delivered them. they are a week old and we have 7 more to go with bottlefeeding. thats bad.

pickup is regular time but mexican fiesta starts at six. im going to make enchiladas and rellenos. heard frank is bringing her famous mexican de coleslaw. i will be toasting our brothers and sisters occupying wall st all night and i dont give two shits what they are protesting - lets party!

1. cucurbits (squash, cukes and melons) gonna be a long winter thinking about the squash. for sure need some lime. the local guy with lime told me there was a minimum order of thirty tons. (?)

2. soy sauce consistency of vomit and speaking of that i have a bunch of it in my fridge if anyone wants it.

3. cornhuskers heres one you might like: vegas has the corn favored to beat THE ohio state this weekend by.............wait for this..................11 points!!!!! if you have or know a bookie please tell him or her to come to the party tomorrow night.

4. federal reserve bank these old boys are turning l00 next year and to celebrate theyve decided its time to call in the worlds notes. lets start out with greece, greece you owe fifty trill with a T...... whos next? lets go portugal. portugal youre not gonna like this very much but youre on the hook for around half of that. its time to tell your people that very bad times lie just ahead. US - we are playing you guys slowly youll be one of the last becasue we are still using the dollar to kick this can down the road a few more months.

5. chicken that dog dont hunt doesnt even begin to describe her anymore. is currently losing her hair becasue all she eats is catfood.

honey tomorrow. we will not be here tomorrow so barb said all the boxes are in garage or driveway and just grab one. lots of basil. make pesto and freeze it. basil is a big time medicinal in africa. we have a swarm of bees on our front porch. dont go in there. the door will be closed but go take a look. bees dont sting while swarming. one of the neighborhood hives swarmed and came over to eat the honey we had on the porch and decided to stay. thousands on our front porch. currently trying to finesse them into some boxes. second to last csa. last next thursday is mexican potluck. i am going to make chile rellenos and chicken enchiladas. its going to be a cinco de mayo atmosphere in support of the protestors at wall st and now chicago. hope it keeps spreading i am "fed up".

the answer is yes there is more french purslane coming tomorrow. sautee for a few minutes - kinda like seafood. more miso. this batch is pretty good. if you want to see honey harvested its saturday afternoon. prepare for possible bee stings these bees are some of the meanest around thats why we are taking all their honey and letting them brave the nebraska winter in the top of a tree. you drive them out of the hives with something called bee - gone. then jank the shootinmatch. just drive off with it. they are that mean. two hives like that. its gonna be wild. come on out.

currently cutting deals pork for acorns. inquire if interested. french purslane and new stuff tomorrow. purslane is delicious. saute.
im still thinking about the squash. cant really get over it. have it dialed up for next year but that doesnt help right now. the problem is i planted the squash in soil that is too good. too organic. and when it rains and gets wet it ferments and creates alcohol and the plants absorb alcohol and the bugs eat the plants and get drunk - and im drunk, and here we are with no squash.

i talked to kevin and charuth this am at shadowbrook and always great to see those two and have a bitch session about farming. this am we spent mostly on squash bugs squash virus and tomato ills. very bizarre and disturbing results on the squash this year. summer and winter varieties both wiped out. butternut squash, the "indestructible" vine perished along with every other kind. im willing to look at every possibility except that i may not know what im doing. earth changes? yes, defintitely! lou's idea to pickle surplus greenbeans is a winner. many easy and delicious recipes for those on interweb. cayenne hot sauce - throw on everything. only hot for a few seconds.

ive been home for twenty minutes and i am pretty sure chicken just figured out who i was. gabon had a little bit of everything - ocean, forest, and black magic. met a few witches. not sure i get along with witches. heard the greenbeans are out of control. heard tomatoes went down but are coming back well. hope everyones good. see you tomorrow.

Good quip by Colbert. (See video below) An oldie but a goodie and I have been thinking of that quote this week. Thanks to all who came out with their visible hands to help me. I really appreciate it. Needless to say, lots of green beans tomorrow. Tomatoes took a dive but they will be back in a few weeks. Okra is starting to appear and I have posted a recipe you can use for it or green beans. Squash in front yard is starting to flower....at least until Weed Authority chops it down. Hoping to have that in the coming weeks. Fall beds are getting planted with radishes, onions, lettuce, parsnips and spinach. Ross is due back in a week. He is on an island near Gabon for the week. Yeah, my sentiments exactly. See you soon.

i am off to africa tomorrow to make a film on the meaning of life. its a documentary so maybe i will discover it. if so i will be passing that on in three weeks. for sure i will pick up some tips on life in a banana republic which it appears will be useful in these united states in the coming months and years. the farm is in the able hands of augo and barb and downs. a lot of you guys have offered to help as well and by all means if you feel like weeding or watering for an hour or two come on out. some good stuff coming for late summer. hope everyone is either sharing or pigging out on the tomatoes. great time to make big sauce or salsa. barb will pick some hot peppers tomorrow. hang on to your hats - not your stocks.

Tomorrow will be very similar to last week with the addition of chard and basil. I am hoping this reprieve from the heat and

gotel cuts the farm in half - goats can stay on that half and i can trap the other half. the foxes are already on to this scheme and i havent even started. can lock the baby goats in the goatel, fully equipped with rifle turrets and upstairs lodge. foxes are trembling without a shadow. csa cant miss tomorrow despite predators: tomato horn worms - have horns like satan five times bigger than any caterpillar youve ever seen. last year i pulled off three all year.. this year the count is 38. augo has a keen eye for these sommbitches. time to move the tomatoes. squash vine borer - red moth that flies like a UFO lays eggs on the stems of squash and the caterpillars eat the core out of the stem - some plants are okay. winter squash looks good becasue i used some chemical on the stems. that probably drove them to the summer squash or its just a bad year. plantedthe front yard in town in squash. the front yards goldenrod was chopped down by the lawn control people with practically no warning. and then..........wait for this....................................................they want me to pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!! it falls in to the overstuffed category of you cant make this shit up.

Finally a slight break in the heat. The vegetables fared o.k. but perhaps went a little dormant during the hot week (as
we all probably did). Therefore a kind of mixed bag today. Beets, cucumbers, basil and some other treats. More kimchi today.
Ross told me to order you to eat it if you aren't. Really healthy stuff, kids. Augo has been busy taking photos and if
Ross ever lets him go home he will send them to me so I can update the blog. Next week you can look forward to
a ton of green beans and tomatoes. Look forward to seeing you soon.

some different stuff tomorrow. kimchee. this is good medicine. lots of garlic. key to garlic is to chop and smash it up and leave it on the counter for an hour or more - to oxidize adn create "allicin" - the antibiotic in garlic. it is illegal to suggest that kimchee would be good to eat if you feel run down or coming down with something so i will just say that a korean farmer cured a whole flock of chickens of avian flu with kimchee. it may be illegal to share that story too. second generation chickens are just starting to lay eggs. happy to report some progress on the fox situation - someone hit one with a car just up the road.

cabbage tomorrow. if a worm crawls out of it call barb and tell her she missed one. if there is a worm it will probably be a redworm that crawled up in there - they dont even eat the cabbage. maybe eat it? the old man was snoring at the farm last night. three inches. its swampy but most everything looks pretty good. summer crops start next week. dont worry though kale and/or chard still in the mix. eat your greens. ive heard people say "i dont like greens" - keep eating them until you do. it wont be long. eggs every other week but will soon be back to normal.

FOXishima update: the chickens are in lockdown - i am in full meltdown. animals are evacuating the farm. i have been trying to trap them and i aint no jeremiah johnson. killed a couple hapless raccoons. lots of greens tomorrow. share with neighbors? tons of kale. turn someone on to it if you cant eat it all. keep on chelating - important for kids especially. make kids eat the greens. spank them with the chard - if they wont eat it.

had to thin some of the beets. beets are related to chard. leaves of young beets indistinguishable from chard. you can see for yourself - chard also. i like them sauteed in olive oil, garlic......then lemon. good over pasta. everyone is probably wandering where the peas are. planted them three times. the third time they came up sparsely. not sure if it was the seeds or the dirt. anyway ill try to get peas in for the fall. chelation csa a week away. heard theres some kind of nuke accident in nebraska somewhere. just got in from the sticks for three days and need to catch up on the disasters.

Hey kids-
Lots of lettuce and broccoli today. We had to cut some of the broc before it flowered
and it didn't store optimally. It will be delicious cooked but did not hold the crunch
of raw so I will also cut you some fresh from the yard when you get here. Lettuce is red and butter crunch. With the storms this morning it is a bit dirtier than normal...so
take extra care in washing it. Loose leaf cannot be vigorously washed or it will disintegrate. Kale and mustard greens also. Fox hunt is ongoing. I saw one today running with the goat herd. They probably think its our dog Chicken...I did at first.

when the foxes hit the trailer last week i moved it along the road where lloyd and the llamas hang out and they have been doing great until yesterday. now importing eggs and implementing zero tolerance for fox kills until next round of layers start laying (a month). hitting the foxes with a full court press mixture of legal and illegal extermination methods. one down one wounded. found their headquarters - there was chicken bones and baby goat hooves strewn all around. augo said he found some beer cans.

major shoutout to scotty mcgreery tonight. what a stud. tomorrow - kale makes its first appearance at csa. downs is making toscano soup for the occasion. year of the beet is back on as these rains have germinated all of my overplantings. kale is second to only sweet potatoes as most nutritious food we can eat. ted eats it raw. i usually steam it. just eat it. greens are part of chelation. cilantro is also a major player. cilantro coming in a few weeks. if you dont like cilantro you have two to three weeks to get that together. anyone seen liz wilson?

its the year of the cabbage. i forgot to tell you guys that. it was going to be the year of the beet but the first rounds of beets didnt germinate worth a shit. nice rain today. lettuce and radishes and two types of spinach - salad and popeye. popeye is third cut thinner and jagged tooth - steam it for twenty seconds in boiling water - according to brad wilson you should also adda teaspoon of vinegar. you should add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar direct everyday. or a bottle of old wine. if the fukoshima thing keeps blowing up next week we will talk about "chelation". a word to learn.

first taste of this years greens tomorrow. thought the spinach....would blow up but hasnt quite yet - needs some sunshine. baby llama born at the farm this am. looks like lloyd. after its weaned this will be free to a good home - home doesnt even have to be that good. tonight for the multiple night in a row we ate sauteed dandelion greens. theyre great. leave the flower buds in if they havent opened yet. good raw too before it gets hot. barb timed the incubation of turkey eggs so they would hatch tomorrow. well see if "eggs are crackin". be sure to congratulate barb on her appointment to secretary of transplantation.

the pizza at the top with jason "downtown" downs was inedible. almost have got it figured out now. croquet course looks good come out for a round and a slice saturday. to be sure of a spot in the croquet tourney you need to get there by at least six or six thirty. there is a bathroom this year. speaking of that be sure to roast butternut squash seeds with olive oil and salt on a cookie sheet. the undigestible seedcoats scrape the colon wall during a bm. sidenote: most male prostrate problems are due to lower colon walls plaque not "enlarged prostrate" but then you couldnt sell avodart to shrink the prostrate and then viagra after your sex drive is eliminated. probably a blood thinner in there too. can thin your blood for two dollars worth of apple cider vinegar. looks like herbal remedies have now become illegal in europe - google codex alimentarius if you want to see just how absurd its getting. herbalists are now criminals in europe. makes me want to put in ten acres of hemp.

this is last call for basil - we are picking entire plants to make way for fall crops - the basil is in a good bed for fall sun. peaches are white peaches. let them ripen on the counter like tomatoes. need to pick tomatoes more often as the grasshoppers begin chewing on them as soon as they begin to turn red. tomatoes not as sweet as nighttime temps fall. bean tunnel is finally flowering so should have beans til it freezes. this according to barb (expert bean picker)

a few people have asked me if i know any secrets to making okra edible. i like to slice it thin and fry it as crispy as possible often to the point of unrecognition. pretty good like that. someone said if you soak them in vinegar they lose their sliminess. hopefully it is raining all day tomorrow after raining all night tonight. farm would take a gullywarsher with damaging hail. cool weather now means beans return next week. plug of the week - banksy movie at the ross.

i picked the cantaloupes before the rain because you want them to dry out and get sweet. leave them on your counter until you can smell them then wait a day or two and you might get a good one. when you plant cantaloupes - all melons and most squash its just a waiting game until they succumb to some insect. you hope to harvest a few before they collapse. they are a lot like the US economy in that way.
I've always thought it was weird that you never hear anything about gardening or small farming when they talk about joblessness but then i heard that the government has reissued S510 which would make growing or trading food illegal and suddenly that made a lot of sense. honey tomorrow - brad and greg had over twenty stings between them (brad five stitches) so it should be good.

theres this recipe that uses eggplant and peanut butter and garlic and scallions and makes kind of a casserole that is incredible but i cant find it. just a reminder that peanut butter overlooked in sauces over pasta.... that might be all i have tonight. heat index is like 115 tomorrow. my itch index is around 190. okra is great with peanut butter. or just fried. i like cold pasta salads.

dad told me he likes to eat the potatoes raw and i tried it. yes. i think i heard that potatoes are dangerous raw and that probably means its a superfood. endamame boil three minutes and eat with soy sauce. sauerkraut=salty. drain - press salt out and rinse or if you sweat eat it like that. good flavor. hoping this storm coming dips south and hits the farm.

eat the tomatoes after they ripen and before they explode. they can get too ripe and just collapse. if you have too many make a spaghetti sauce. about ten percent of the potatoes were rotten due to too much rain so we washed them even though your not supposed to do that because they last much longer if you just wipe the dirt off them - so just eat them sooner than later. miso tomorrow. miso is great for you. dont cook it - eat raw in salad dressing......or by the spoonful. i found out this week that chickens eat duckweed - algae that floats on ponds and looks like green confetti. ive been feeding it and they devour it. it has forty percent protein. very exciting news. thanks for the tip P!

according to doppler radar the farm just got drenched again this am. greens may be saturated in which case might not cut them. thats okay though because lots of stuff for the grill. summer squash are ripening now. i love them. bigger zucchinis are the best. i used to cut them really small but then some italian guy told me to let them grow bigger and he was right. treat squash eggplants like meat if you grill them. cut the long way. garlic, olive oil salt and pepper. lots of both on the way in the coming weeks. see you tonight.

summer csa officially starts tomorrow . tomatoes are just starting to get red and should be going great by next week. beans are improving but all the summer crops look good and should be a good second half of the season. i know you are all now wondering "will there still be chard?" the answer is there will always be chard. eat the greens! - think of eating them as easy and it will be. the collards look good. throw them in anythng. no clue what is going on with the eggs. last week i thought they had a secret nest that i couldnt find but now i think theyre just in a slump. happy bastille day tomorrow! vive le rev!

the picture of the crow should have been the thing perched on barbs shoulder - about five miles after it came to. we picked it up off the road and it was in shock i think. barb whispered "please get it off" with such urgency i didnt take a picture. more rain coming tonight and tomorrow. might be digging a trench around the kale beds - they are in need of a dry out - who isnt? it is with not a lot of sadness that i am passing along the first CROP FAILURE of the year - italian parsley has dirtnapped. i think we cut it once so not a complete failure - hope you made a pasta salad or something with it. possible beans tomorrow.

costners machines are reportedly working very well and BP has ordered 35 of them. the sioux indians have issued a prayer as well. its a stretch to find some good news about that and many other topics but i do have some good news about your prospects for fourth of july cole slaw. and the summer crops are looking pretty good. if you have extra jars - any jar - that you dont want please drop them off we are going to be jarring up kimchee and miso and some other stuff in the next few weeks. see you tomorrow.

nice rain! csa gets better tomorrow. they say to "stagger" the plantings of lettuce so there is a continual harvest. this year all of them just sat there and now many even though planted weeks apart are ready to eat so plan on eating a lot of salad this week. maybe eat one everyday and just keep the salad dressing going like a sourdough mix. (or kombucha which barb has been making a lot of and its delicious.) i apologize that the eggs have been low so far. when we started csa this year we were getting four dozen a day and now its around three. i think too many are breaking and the chickens are now being fed oystershells which toughens the shells up but i am going to buy some more adult layers as well. If you see my sister kathleen tomorrow be sure to wish her happy birthday.

Today brings some beautiful merlot lettuce and some not so beautiful (but delicious) romaine. We have a groundhog or some other varmit taking bites off of it. Tons of greens as well. This is the last cut of the spinach so I have included it in your bag of greens. It would be best to cook this stuff. Ross promises a more bountiful harvest in the fall. Eggs are light this week...not really sure why. I suppose I can just blame the varmit. For the good news...peas are flowering and chinese cabbage is heading.

things are growing very slowly this spring. cold nights and cloudy days and most plants just seems to sit there. spinach - which loves cool weather has been especially disappointing. i planted the spinach in lower beds that get a little shade which in a warm spring would prolong it but it has slowed it up this year. some nice romaines tomorrow and i will be making caesar salads tomorrow in memory of the late great Peter Hasselbalch who specialized in the coddled egg caesar. if you thought you missed peter now wait til you try my caesar.

New this week....Red Ruby Lettuce. The lettuce heads are still small but very tasty.
Hoping to see some sun so the lettuce can "fully express".
Also, a mixed bag of greens (Kale, chard, beet greens, collards).

gametime decision on cutting the spinach tomorrow. otherwise the makings for a tasty salad and some eggs. things blow up next week. i hope everyoneis starting a compost pile. everythign that will compost goes in there. put it right on the ground somewhere.paper, cardboard all food scraps including meat scraps, maybe maybe not on kittly litter. dont have a cat so never had to make that call- but a compost pile is a lot of fun and plants LOVE compost. favorite website on agriculture is permaculture australia - geoffrey lawton. i have now read the whole library about permaculture projects worldwide. permaculture disaster relief is incredible where they start grinding all the wood up and growing mushrooms......

hey everyone. first csa is this afternoon. csa starts slowly and builds momentum. this year is no exception. going to be some lettuce and eggs and a few greens some foraged. i bought a book on edible wild plants and have been trying a lot of them. edible means digestible not necessarily delicious. ill bring in some of my favorites. my favorite is dandelion greens but i assume you guys would know where to get some of those. recommended. raw or steamed. had a baby goat born at the farm yesterday and barb managed to not post the photo of it on the blog. it was brown and white if anyone is curious.

I know it is hard to believe-but spring will be here before we know it.
Dates for 2010 CSA (community supported agriculture) will be April 21st-October 13th. Pick-up is on Wednesday this year from 4-6pm at our house. (1129 Harrison). CSA starts with a bunch of greens such as spinach, lettuce, kale, chard, collards and arugula. As we move toward summer, expect radishes, peas, carrots, beets, broccoli and cabbage. During the summer your boxes will contain beans, cucumbers, basil, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, okra, zucchini and squash.
As csa ends in early fall, expect more greens, pumpkins and winter squash.

hey csaers - its with a heavy heart that i announce the last csa of 09. i want to take this time to give everyone some financial advice because i see a huge "adjustment" in the economy before halloween, jackolantern included. tomorrow am, call your accountant and cash in your IRA. take the money, bet it on the cornhuskers tomorrow to cover the four points at missouri, take the winnings and buy some gold, silver, bronze, bronze futures, property, gin, cigarettes............anything that has value because we are about to be told that the dollar "ain't worth what it used to be"/ dont panic, quietly move your ira into something thats not based on some disneyland type arrangement with our "federal" "reserve" bank. and whatever john elway says, dont give up your guns. John, I just want to say that that is the most embarrassing thing i have ever seen (see link) im 43 years old and that is seriously the most pathetic piece i have ever seen. to date, and its not close, that is the most fuc.....

dont forget to roast the seeds of butternut squash and pumpkins. two kinds of pumkins coming. both highly prized for cooking. one is a sugar pumpkin that looks like a traditional pumpkin the other is a cheese pumpkin which is just a large round butternut squash. the best thing to make with them i think is pumpkin pie. you always here how much work making a pumpkin pie is - when i hear that i dont bother suggesting they roast the seeds because its way too much work to clean the seeds. principal food crop in most of the world - here we carve an ugly face in the them and throw them away. barb has posted a couple articles on vaccinations. it appears that these are coming down the pike. lots of medical personel refusing them and most people dont trust them. key word squalene i think. new item that tastes like dirt tomorrow: jerusalem artichokes. also called sunchokes. have fun with them. steger calls them jesus fingers.

greens tomorrow are going to be really good. make them up. no more than thirty seconds in boiling water. the nightclub is almost opened. this nightclub is "goat heated" in the winter - fifty goats will live below it. an old polish tradition. and welsh. the dancefloor is heated by goats. hogleg (pictured) is going to pick up some hours this winter as doorman. great use of whole csa box tomorrow = chile. no wash - cut up and place in pot with chili powder and salt and pepper. eat as ark state whoops huskers. friday is the anniversary of 9 - 11 - I always dress up as osama bin laden for 9 - 11 and just run around town - hide in the gutters and behind bushes. so far so good.

zucchini are great on the grill. cut em the long way like a steak and grill with olive oil and salt and pepper. medium rare. put A1 on em. giving vegetarianism another thought after seeing food inc last friday. wow - yuck. if eggs are a little off its because we are incubating. plugging my comedy show the 18th of this month friday. three comedians - eight bucks. richard reese is worth the price of admission by himself. a good way to use the green beans is to make the old time favorite three bean salad using just greenbeans. year of the carrot peaks tomorrow. carrots not a specialty at the farm. probably need to add sand to some of the beds. everything likes that really. hope everyone is looking in to this vaccine thing. the makers of the vaccine are saying they arent going to take it. worth reading about. see you tomorrow.

might be a few extra tomatoes tomorrow and definitely a few extra greenbeans. greenbeans freeze well. place n bag, submerge in water - as the water comes close to the top zip it. the water pressure vacuums them. same with tomato sauce. or make a huge spagetti sauce. feeling restless? stressed out? cant sleep? read an article the other day that there is an epidemic of insomnia in the country. whenever i couldnt sleep my dad used to always say that "you always get enough sleep". something about your body always gets what it needs eventually. in the meantime try some of the farms honey in peppermint tea before bed. excercise seems to help everything. or go to a town hall meeting.

what a storm the other night. 75 mph winds coupled with small hail that was described as a ten minute shotgun blast by one of my neighbors. lots of the corn around the farm was stripped of all its leaves and laid down partway. i think it will still make a crop because it was pretty well along but it would have been a bumper crop. the farm seems to have lucked out on the hail part but the winds took out some tomato plants. ridiculous amount of greenbeans tomorrow. google green bean potato chips where you baked them on a cookie sheet. really good if you get tired of them. pack em in pickle jars use old pickle juice. or just give them away. beans difficult to grow in the city because of the bean beetle. pole beans are better than bush - and planting late can help. great site here about turning your yard (or your neighbors lawn) in to a garden. great stuff.

beans have been bitten by bean beatles.still very edible. scar from beetle bite adds some texture. should grow out of it next week. lots of tomatoes - gear up. hopefully some peppers. looks like salsa. habaneros available upon request. miso - use it "as you wish"/ it is alive. dont boil it - kills the organisms. if youre not getting enough live food just go eat some dirt.

a little more rain this week and mid eighties temps. it feels like san diego. beans are starting to trickle in and will soon become tiresome. very tasty though. love em lightly steamed and then cold all week. cukes going off. cant say enough about cuke and onions with rice vinegar but let me try: wow cuke and onions are one of my favorite foods. i dont skin the cukes and add black pepper then eat them all. tomatoes go good in that dish. have you perfected the cooking of the yellow squash? prepared right i think its better than most steak. barb wants everyone to bring back sauerkraut containers (if empty. more kraut coming tomorrow - with carrots) and boxes.

veteran csaers may not recognize these two words: cucumbers tomorrow. cucumbers are white. picked some peppers that were the results of flowers on when i transplanted. peppers should be good in september. grasshoppers eating only two edibles right now - eggplant leaves and chard. eggplants like it one hundred degrees. so do a lot of things i guess. bees love it. goat population is exploding. i remember learning the shepherds motto before buying goats that said "start small and expand until you are out of control." check - check.

tomatoes are picked when they show any color other than green. then they ripen on tables in the garage. didnt grow as fun of tomatoes this year. went for huge production and we will see what happens but from the looks of it plan on making a bunch of tomato dishes. they are looking good. grasshoppers are heavy. implementiong the only sure thing against them this weekend - the only thing that works - chickens and turkeys. very excited to announce the return of the eggmobile starting next week - pics to follow. bought some "electrified poulty netting" that keeps out the badgers and foxes. i think i can offset the cost just on the grasshoppers vs feed. eggs should be great on grasshoppers.

lots of stuff tomorrow, lots of it edible. dont miss this one. a client who shall remain nameless tried to shell the peas last week. these are sugarsnaps - natures candy - eat all. someone else suggested sesame oil when you saute greens. you dont need much with sesame oil and you should add it very late. broccolli might have a worm or two in it. soak in salt water for five minutes or so before eating raw. if cooking i wouldnt worry about it. peanut butter is good in everything. peanut butter/soy sauce great with vegetables with noodles. great cold the next day too.

last year the cabbage moths were so bad that i grew only cabbage from that family out there. tomorrow i am starting to pick the cabbage and when its gone maybe i will have broken the cycle. when they are gone i will plant some brassicas for the fall. in the meantime the chard looks pretty good. hopefully everyone likes it. just lightly steam it and squeeze a lemon over it and tell yourself its good for you. just me tomorrow - barb is going to minneapolis to help her sister move. i will be here by four for sure.

good stuff tomorrow. chard and beets make their premiere. i like beets roasted. skin peels easily when they are done. they are very pretty without the skin but i eat it a lot. beets are the best. a lot of people eat the greens. they taste like chard - same family - but not as good. chard is an aquired taste and everyone should acquire one. i like it steamed with lemon. fried with garlic is great too.

nice rain last night. well take six more just like that. its amazing the difference between rain and hosewater on plants. rain is "biodynamic". biodynamic gardeners stir water in huge barrels before watering their plants to "align it with the universe" or something like that. plants need much less of it supposedly. barb and watched the calf being born yesterday. textbook delivery from favorite cow joan. eggs are mysteriously off this week. looked for secret nests but couldnt find any. had two days of very low numbers but they were back up today so we should be fine. making miso tomorrow night if you come late.

this recipe for optiko cabbage is a favorite around my sister kathleens house. its great. other people eat it raw. beet thinnings in the salad mix tomorrow. should be a small beet on the end - eat all. it is the "year of the carrot" and that also means the year of the beet. learn to like beets. it always rains memorial day weekend and i hope that holds true this year. think rain - make it happen.

these cool temperatures have been very good to the spinach. leaves are large and still savoy. (i think thats the word for the texture of the leaves.) last of the somewhat misshapen greenhouse lettuce - next week we go outdoors for the lettuce. new stuff next week - more of the same tonight. barb was cleaning the eggs last night and said the shells are thin which means i need to go get some more crushed oyster shells to feed them. still very good for your compost pile. If you dont have a compost pile i highly recommend one. i hear some people say they dont want one because it will attract raccoons - a small price to pay for compost from garbage. forget the tumblers.....just put it right on the ground so worms can enter it.

the timing is a little off on the romaine lettuce. still a little immature tomorrow but still casesar salad worthy. oneof these weeks the romaine will be full grown. lots of spinach tomorrow. brad wilson likes to cook the spinach and add some vinegar. squeezing a half grapefruit with or without sugar on it over greens is tasty if no time to make a salad dressing. best to make a big batch of dressing and keep it in a jar. Hardboiling fresh eggs is best to just crack the egg in boiling water - fresh eggs are hard to peel. if you are making deviled eggs keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks. barb wants to remind everyone to save egg cartons. see you tomorrow.

hey fellow aliens - tomorrow is a cant miss. tomatoes not as juicy as they were in july (bc they're picked green or because as suite lou says the temperature has dipped below 50?) good greens tomorrow despite goats eating off kale and spinach while i was in the bush. glad there is a picture of the green bean tunnel in its glory before the goats bustout. great africa trip. gardens everywhere. tomorrow afternoon at the ross theatre myself and the three candidates for senator debate a film about ethanol at two oclock. Hey Kids-
I know this is going to surprise you, but a lot of green beans tomorrow.
As the temps cool, not quite as many tomatoes as in weeks past. The temperatures added to the fact that the grasshoppers are now eating the green tomatoes may forebode the end of their appearances at csa. The goats escaped but did not go far...just into the garden where they ate most of the greens. I will suss it out tomorrow, but if we have greens they will be turnip greens, collards and chard. Kale is a goat's favorite snack apparently. Bell Peppers seem to be doing nicely as well as the basil and lemon basil.
I need to wait for the Anaheim peppers to turn red but they are doing great so get your chile relleno recipes together for next week. Ross is having a great time in Kenya. They have built a greenhouse on the farm and his next project is a new fish pond.

Hey Kids-
Ross is en route to Kenya to teach at a bio-intensive farm. Luckily, for the country, he will not be instructing on fencing or animal containment. The cows seem to favor anywhere but the 65+ acres they have. Tomorrow you will be getting some white peaches and apples along with the normal stuff. Still tons of green beans. The greens this week will be a mixture of turnip greens and mustard and we will have both the french breakfast (red and white) radishes along with more daikons. I am sorry that the blog has not been updated. We have had some computer issues... but I will do it next week.

tonights blog was going to be how to keep your family safe during a greenbean hurricane. While its not quite stage five yet the key advise is to keep it light - if that means singing the more you eat the more you toot song then by all means. they freeze great. parboil, place in bag, submerge in water to force air out. seal bag just above the water. big beans the best. no french thin ones around here. posted a picture of the chicken trailer from last year just to pay homage to one of the greatest technologies of all time. i wish so much that i had it up and running right now because they would wipe the grasshoppers completely out. grasshoppers sampling almost every other tomato. see you tomorrow.

we are barbless tomorrow - she is flying to tennessee to drive a truck home with her brother tim who is moving back to star city after two years in nashville. my idea for tomorrows is to make a stew out of the whole box. maybe add an onion or two. i think you would end up with a greek dish if you had oregano. if you see a few small holes in the greens tomorrow let it be a reminder that we share this mortal coil with grasshoppers. eat your greens. honey tomorrow. barb is spinning it out right now. very tasty. bees doing well which means that they must not be too exposed to too many genetically modified crops which is the most current explanation for the colony collapses. I think the prince of england even said as much. maybe he has a soft spot for bees. GM crops are almost so destructive its almost indescribable. Google it if you have the stomach for it. has fall come early this year? love these temps. lots more tomatoes today. went to a barbeque the other night and talked about the different ways to put up tomatoes. i think the best is just cook them down and then freeze in bags. add spices....later or before freezing for winter salsa or spaghetti sauce. its great to jar them up too and that way you dont lose them when your freezer goes on the fritz as ours did last year. remember to add basil to sauce at the last minute even after turning the heat off. (same with parsley). bean tunnel is finally flowering! beans should be pouring in from here on out. barb in case you hadnt heard this is one of the best bean pickers ive ever seen. see you tonight.

the only thing that i know for sure is there is going to be a lot of tomatoes. maybe make a sauce. eat or freeze. fancy chefs peel and core for dark red sauce. i just cook all. fresh sauerkraut.crunchy. make some polish dogs for it. incredible. some eggplants. lots of small eggplants and i think i saw the bean tunnel flowering today so lots of different stuff coming but tomorrow mostly tomatoes but lots of them. give them to neighbors. included at top is video on gardening on the white house lawn. i know ron paul would grow one and probably write a cookbook too. does give a cursory idea of how to transform your lawn in to a garden. if you decide to do that i am the dumptruck guy dropping the compost on your driveway.

hey everybody
we lost loose the goose this week. must have eaten something - llamas develop ulcers that can be fatal. looked all over the body and found no signs of anything except her testicles. he will be missed. cant believe lucy was a male. from the looks of louise's coping corner it is a profound loss. i share louise's champain. tomorrow lots of tomatoes. let them ripen on the counter not in the sun and eat them when they are near perfectly red. they blow up if you dont eat them then. cukes lemon basil/basil and squash. not sure why and when the bean tunnel decides to flower but when it does it will be raining string beans. eggplants coming on finally. was worried about them. good germination on the round two of beets still no sign of the carrot replant but plenty of beets coming later. lost most of them and carrots this spring. going to add sand to some of the lower beds. also think squash hills need sand.

hey csaers
we have called off the collards tomorrow which makes tomorrow a cant miss. cabbage butterfly is beyond out of control. massive insects at the farm right now. grasshoppers - only eating basil right now. huge weird green bugs that look like robots flying around everywhere and they are territorial so they buzz by your ear all the time. bees and bumblebees now everywhere. honey in a few weeks. tomorrow cabbage, lots of stuff. probably carrots. the carrots are so old because they jsut sat their all spring. same with beets. mixed bag tomorrow. tomatoes starting to take off. looking good. bean tunnel taking its time blossoming. eggplants finally looking good. have to get here early to get one of those though. im predicting the collards will be back in the fall.

barb said to me tonight "hey maybe we should take a break on the collards tomorrow"and i said no way. collards are hitting their stride right now. tomatoes tomorrow and a few beans and other stuff. lots of beans and tomatoes in the near future. i am starting to believe that there will be a lot of cucumbers but as you guys know there probalby wont be. had the best ones ever the year before i started doing csa since then theyve all basically wilted. cuke and onions is the summers best offer. theyre still looking good. and squash. you will either get a zucchini or a lebanese white squash tomorrow. lebanese white are also great grilled or sauteed with olive oil and salt and pepper - also great stuffed with meat after scooping out seeds - then baked. tomorrow basil is holey due to grasshoppers - cant believe they eat it. these are the first tomatoes. they will get much better/ see you tomorrow.

whats the haps? new stuff tomorrow - collards look better - i think i let them get dry waiting for last wednesdays rain that didnt come thus violating one of the tenets of gardening - water plants when they are thirsty. lots of different greens tomorrow. basil.....should have tomatoes next week. basil without tomatoes = pesto.
lots of baby goats born at the farm this week. goat favorite bina popped trips and is working overtime keeping them all fed. Lucy the llama babysits baby goats during the day under this tree. need a picture of that its hilarious. cucumbers looking good and well poised for wilt virus. they are in a new spot this year though.
had a question about broccolli going bad in the fridge and the smell ruining you for csa for the rest of the season. no stranger to rotting brassicas i would advise to eat sooner and not to place veggies in sealed plastic bags. want to plug a cant miss rock and roll show at ll 00 pm saturday night - the self righteous brothers are back breaking the ladies hearts for a one night stand at the zoo bar street dance.

tomorrow - cole slaw. happy ron paul day everyone. just heard that the whole world could fit in to the state of texas with ten feet between everyone. not sure what to think about that but interesting, possibly embarrassing. i think one of the weirdest things going on is the tax on carbon dioxide - a life giving gas. carbon dioxide levels are rising in great amounts and everyone is going to be taxed on it. Kind of hilarious to watch al gore say this stuff with a straight face. unstoppable mosquito repellant - listerine mouthwash watered down and sprayed on your clothes.happy holidays
